Key Points: Health Insurance Open Enrollment Period 2021 / 2022

  • Health Insurance Open Enrollment begins every year on November 1st, and lasts until December 15th. However, many states extend this deadline to January 15th, and a few until January 30th. (A list of state-by-state health insurance deadlines can be found below).
  • If you sign up for a new plan or switch to a different one during Open Enrollment, the changes will go into effect on January 1st, 2022. If you’re in a state with an extended deadline, your coverage could begin on February 1st, 2022.
  • As of this year, health insurance subsidies are no longer only available to people who earn 400% of the Federal Poverty Level or below. That means that low-premium plans are available to more people than in previous years. This could be a good time to run a quote.

  2. Household Changes: If you get married or divorced, have a baby, adopt a child, or have a death in the family.
  3. Residence Changes: If you move to a different county or zip code, or move out of a shelter or transitional housing.
  4. Other Changes: These can include becoming a U.S. citizen, getting out of prison or incarceration, joining or leaving AmeriCorps, or gaining membership in a federally recognized tribe under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA).
