Altrua Healthshare Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) – View Story

Q: What is the most popular Altrua plan?

A: Currently the most popular Altrua plan we sell is the Ruby plan. This is popular because it has very low monthly contributions to be a member. Note however, that it does have some strict limitations, including a $150,000 annual limit on what it will share.

Another low cost option you may want to review is Jericho Share.

Q: Do I have to be a Christian to get Altrua?

A: Altrua HealthShare members must sign a Statement of Standards. This includes commitment to good nutrition and a rejection of tobacco and illicit drugs, as well as some biblical-based ideals on marriage, community, and abortion. However, there is no requirement to be an active member of a church.

Q: How do I use a health sharing plan?

A: Simply present your Altrua HealthShare Membership ID to your provider, explaining that you are a member of a recognized Health Care Sharing Ministry. Your provider will send the bill to Altrua Healthshare, who will process payment after the expense is approved.

Q: Will my doctor accept Altrua HealthShare?

A: Altrua Members present themselves as self-pay patients when they visit a doctor. They can go to any provider or facility, regardless of their network affiliation.

Altrua HealthShare is not available in Florida or Montana.

Q: Does Altrua HealthShare require a health screening?

A: There is no physical health screening required for membership in Altrua HealthShare. However, all members must complete an online application which includes a personal medical history. Submitting inaccurate medical information could lead to a limitation or denial of membership.

Q: Does Altrua HealthShare include maternity?

A: All Altrua HealthShare members can receive sharing for maternity costs after a 90-day waiting period. Sharing benefits increase after 1 and 2 years of membership to a maximum of $25,000.

Run, don't walk away from Altura

Rated 1.0 out of 5
February 27, 2024

I live a healthy live style and they are not paying any of my medical bills. Cancer diagnosis 10/23, surgery 12/23, radiation 2/24 and nothing has been paid. Do Not sign up for them. It is very hard to accept they are a christian health care organization, yet they will not pay for health care needs and expenses for those that choose to live a healthy lifestyle. Cancer does not have favorites. I do not know how else to say that you need to avoid a Heath Sharing Plan forever. PJ in Puyallup, WA

Its affordable and an alternative to traditional health insurance

It gives a comprehensive and affordable health share plan for my family. The coverage has been reliable, and we’ve experienced smooth claims processing. While the customer service is generally good, there have been a few instances where communication could have been more proactive. Overall, I am satisfied with Altura and would recommend it to others seeking an alternative to traditional health insurance.

Altrua’s a scam

I went to the doctor with a nasty sinus problem. When I sent the bill to Altrua, they assumed I blew out my sinuses snorting cocaine (this is a lie) and denied the claim. Later, I got diagnosed with granulomatosis (Wegener’s disease) which is an autoimmune disorder that attacks sinuses and the upper respiratory system. But they stll fought me. The bill wound up in collections, ruining my credit. This never would have happened with Blue Cross. I wound up switching back. Premiums are higher, but you get what you pay for.

I have 15 employees. We started offering Altrua healthsharing as an alternative to our group health insurance plan that was easier for our workers to afford. So far it’s been a big hit. It saves both the company and the employees money. We were able to take some of the money we saved and reinvest it back into our employee benefits package with health reimbursement arrangements and hospital insurance. So far very happy with the value that Altrua provides.

Caveat: Nobody’s had a big medical emergency yet! We’ll be watchint to see how well they do when it counts!

I had a complicated medical situation. Plus my doctor’s office never heard of Altrua, so that was stressful. I called the companyt and spoke with Anna who was very patient and helped me. I had the Ruby plan so I had to pay a lot but they reimbursed me what they were supposed to.

STEER CLEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rated 1.0 out of 5
January 27, 2023

I don’t understand why people are rating this company based on the ease of sign up- OF COURSE that will be a great experience; they want your money!!! Might want to wait until you ACTUALLY need to use it before doing so…

If I could give them ZERO stars, I would. Be prepared to not have A CLUE in how much they will ‘share’, if anything, towards medical claims. They also do not have EDUCATED staff to review medical records before making determinations as to what qualifies or breaks their ‘rules’. I was involved in a NO-FAULT accident, shattered my pelvis on both sides, had to be transported to the hospital via ambulance and spent 4 days there. The medical bills were HUGE. They first tried to get me to work with the hospital and get financial relief (I was out of work for the 1st and only time in my life due to Covid and business basically shutting down) so they could get out of sharing anything- The hospital didn’t buy that and said Altrua had to FIRST contribute and whatever was remaining they would work with me on. Fast-forward and they then DENIED ALL CLAIMS, stating ‘excessive alcohol’ use. When you sign up for this membership, and in order to remain eligible for sharing you have to live a healthy lifestyle- No smoking, no excessive alcohol… The medical records team read my blood test wrong!!! 24ml equates to a .02 BAC. It even said on the test result ‘null / none found’. But they conveniently ignored that, either played stupid or truly weren’t smart enough to convert it and *decided* that my BAC was .24. After hours and hours of phone calls, 4 appeal letters explaining this…. They FINALLY started sharing. But they screwed me ROYALLY- Because bills went unpaid and to collections, my credit score went from over 800 down to under 700. Fast forward over 2 YEARS later and I’m STILL working to get the last item paid and removed from the credit reporting agencies. This last one they submitted as a ‘Workman’s Comp’ claim so they could get a lower negotiated rate (they are responsible for 100% of this bill) and it was rejected because it was obviously filed under false pretenses. Even when this last item is paid and removed from my credit score, it will take YEARS before it goes back up to where it was.

Literally, a nightmare. I’d just assume not have insurance / healthshare coverage at all. Over 2 YEARS of dealing with just this, the financial impact, stress… NO THANK YOU. I dumped them and am now with Oneshare Health and have never been happier.

Terrible organization. I paid in over 10,000 for the year, got one check for $85 and have to fight for any reimbursements over the phone with their outsourced agents in the Phillipines. Horrible service. Horrible “coverage”. I do NOT recommend to anyone.

Saving up for a house

Rated 4.0 out of 5
October 12, 2022

My husband and joined Altrua because it saved us 400 every month compared to our medical plan from before. We don’t get an obamacare subsidy, so we couldn’t afford the exchange. Our new plan works well for us, especially with a direct primary care plan. Now we can save more for a house!

Be careful

September 16, 2022

Since this is not insurance but a cost sharing program, they are MANY pre-existing medical care exclusions! CAUTION. Within an hour of my purchase, I felt really uncomfortable about my plan and called back to cancel. (10 day cancel policy) They make it really hard to cancel and were down-right rude to me. They would not allow me to speak with a supervisor. NOT very Christian, as they claim to be!

Not a fan of Altrua

August 29, 2022

Altrua sucks! I had to go to the ER. I got discharged that night. Didn’t think anything of it. I got a bill in the mail a couple of weeks later. I sent it in to Altrua for healthsharing, and they rejected it on a technicality because I didn’t contact them within 96 hours.

I dropped them and went with someone else.

They let me try the plan out for a month before committing. They seemed like nice enough folks so I went ahead and signed up after that. I don’t get sick very often, so I hate paying for health insurance I don’t need. This is a cheap way for me to avoid an insurance plan.

Have Altrua for my husband and me

Rated 3.0 out of 5
June 3, 2022

My husband and I signed up last year. They’ve been okay so far. We’re in one of the upper-level plans and we’re only paying a few hundred bucks a month. It’s way better than our old insurance plan. But we had to set aside some money to cover our Member Amount, which is what we have to pay before the plan kicks in.

My Altrua program has a $1,000,000 sharing limit. I thought that was a lot when I signed up, but now, I’m not so sure. Hospitals are charging a lot these days and I’m worried how much it will cost if I get into a car accident or something. I don’t know. Other than that, I guess they are okay. I only have to pay about $200 per month.

Changing my review from four stars to 5

Rated 5.0 out of 5
April 18, 2022

Updating my review because the issue was totally resolved. Turns out my plan comes with more free doctor visits that I thought! I don’t have to worry about one of us getting sick anymore. There’s just a small fee when one of us needs to see the doctor, and we don’t have to cover our full out of pocket amount.

Have had altrua diamond for a few years felt safe that i had a policy. until I called for help to find a podiatry. I looked up their list 2 pages none of the doctor offices have heard of them.So I called altrua for help in locating a doctor that they might help me pay for. they told me to have doctors submit a form to them. These people will not help me . I am in pain and without help with my foot i can no longer help my disabled wife push her wheelchair. also the damond level seems to be worthless. maybe i did not pray enough for help from this company. But pay i do they love the money i spend.

Two words: Unlimited telemedicine

February 17, 2022

When the pandemic hit almost my entire family stopped going to the doctor. Altrua gives us free telehealth, which makes it easy to consult with a professional without having to drive anywhere. I’m in the cheapest plan they have, and I still get telemedicine included.

Loving the Diamond-level membership

January 11, 2022

After a few years with Altrua I decided to upgrade to the Diamond membership. It’s the only health sharing plan that I know of that has maternity and adoption benefits. It’s more expensive than what I used to be in but I know that it’s worth it.

Unlimited telemedicine has been a God-send during the pandemic. They’re probably getting tired of me calling all the time, but I’m able to chat with a real professional about my concerns without having to drive anywhere. And they never charge me for it.

Altrua has lots of sharing options

Rated 5.0 out of 5
November 29, 2021

The Diamond and Emerald plans are pretty impressive, especially for a health sharing program. They’re some of the only plans that have sharing options for maternity, adoption, and even funeral needs. The Diamond plan is definitely more expensive than the others, but it’s still keeping my family well-protected for a lot less than those ACA plans.

Good option for new parents

September 21, 2021

I’m pretty happy with our Altrua plan. We had tried health sharing once before, but once we decided to have a kid, we knew we’d need a program with better benefits. Our Sedera Diamond program has coverage for both pregnancy and adoption, with an MRA (kind of like a deductible) that we could afford. With my husband and I we’re only paying about $400 per month, which is way better than our old insurance plan.

September 20, 2021

Altrua has a lifetime sharing limit of $1,000,000. That might seem like a lot, but with what hospitals are charging these days, who knows. Anyway, the Ruby-level program is one of the most affordable healthshare options on the market. It’s only about $100 a month, so that makes it worth it for me in the end.

We like the Altrua office visit pooling

Rated 5.0 out of 5
September 1, 2021

I originally gave Altrua a 4/5 because my daughter got sick as we were about to run out of sharing for office visits. Then they told me that our family program means that all of our office visits are pooled. Since the rest us haven’t had to see the doctor this year, my daughter can use those visits instead, and all we have to pay is the $45 MRA.

One of the only reasons I ended up with Altrua is because of the 30-day trial. I just wanted to see how everything worked, and how good the customer service was. I didn’t have any medical expenses during that time, but it was clear that these were the people that I wanted handling my healthcare.
