Over the last few decades, Health Sharing Plans have given Americans an affordable, flexible alternative to traditional health insurance. As insurance continues to get more expensive and less versatile, more and more people will be making the switch to healthshare. With that in mind, the HSA for America team of experts is prepared to help. The following is a list of 6 of the most interesting, need-to-know facts about health sharing plans.

6 Interesting Facts About Health Sharing Plans

Health Sharing Fact 1: Healthshare Plans Make It Possible to Share the Cost of Medical Expenses

Healthshare programs allow community members and like-minded individuals to share the cost of healthcare. When members experience a sudden or unexpected healthcare bill, the costs can be reimbursed by the member community. Similar to health insurance, healthshare programs ask members to make a monthly contribution in exchange for sharing services.

Health Sharing Fact 2: Healthshare Plans Are Not Insurance

These plans are offered by Health Care Sharing Ministries (HCSMs). These are private organizations that are not subject to the rampant over-regulation of traditional insurance. This allows them to be more affordable than many health insurance plans.

Because ACA health insurance isn’t a good fit for everybody, healthshare plans are a much needed 2nd option for the American consumer.

Healthshare Fact 3: HCSMs Have Rules for Membership Eligibility

Because HCSMs are private, community-based organizations, all members must meet a set of eligibility requirements. These requirements vary depending on which HCSM you choose.

In general, membership eligibility includes agreeing to support your community, live a healthy lifestyle, and avoid illicit drugs and activities. Many HCSMs also have a faith-based component, most of which are based on the teachings of the Christian bible.

Healthshare Fact 4: Healthshare Plans Have Limits on Pre-Existing Conditions

While the rules vary by program, most healthshare plans have more limitations on pre-existing conditions. This usually includes a 1- or 2-month waiting period before medical expenses can be shared.

If you’re thinking about switching to a medical sharing plan, ask your Personal Benefits Manager to find one that works with your medical needs.

Health Sharing Fact 5: Some Health Sharing Plans can be HSA-Qualified

Health Savings Accounts, or HSAs, are a valuable investing tool where you can save pre-tax money to use on health expenses. Until recently, however, HSAs were only available to individuals in high-deductible insurance plans.

Now, by enrolling in a Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) plan, it’s possible to combine the low monthly cost of a healthshare plan with the savings potential of an HSA.

MPB Health is one HSCM that offers an HSA-qualified healthshare plan. Your Personal Benefits Manager can help you switch over.
