The HSA Healthshare: Health Sharing Savings Plus an HSA-Oriented Design

The HSA Healthshare plan means you no longer have to choose between the savings of health sharing and a membership designed to work alongside a Health Savings Account (HSA).

The HSA Healthshare Plan: Two Parts, One Membership

The HSA Healthshare is the newest membership we offer, and it is already the one we recommend most.

Here is how the health sharing side works. Members pay a set monthly contribution into a sharing community. That community shares one another’s eligible medical costs under published Member Guidelines.

The second part is an MEC component. It handles required preventive services, and it is the piece that makes the membership HSA-oriented.

The sharing side steps in for the large, unexpected costs: surgery, a hospital stay, specialist care, or an emergency. The MEC side is what keeps the membership HSA-oriented.

What Every Membership Includes

The membership goes well beyond the basics.

  • 18 Member Responsibility Amount (MRA) levels, from $1,500 to $10,000 in $500 steps
  • No age bands, so your monthly contribution does not step up as you get older
  • See any licensed provider you choose
  • Enroll on any day of the month. Your effective date is the 1st of the following month
  • Household safeguard: no household pays more than two MRAs in a rolling 12-month period. After that, additional eligible Sharing Requests over $1,000 are shared without another MRA. Pre-existing and maternity requests are not part of this safeguard
  • Maternity: pregnancies conceived more than 30 days after your start date are eligible. Prenatal and postnatal office care is shared up to $6,000 per Maternity Sharing Request, and medically necessary delivery services have no sharing limit
  • Prescription sharing up to $125,000 or 12 months of continuous medication per approved Sharing Request
  • Emergency care abroad, plus scheduled care overseas when it costs less than in the US

The membership is open to individuals and families, for adults 18 to 64 with dependent children under 26.

About the HSA Side

The HSA Healthshare plan includes an MEC component, and that is what makes the membership HSA-oriented.

Whether you can open and fund an HSA depends on your own circumstances, including any other health arrangement you hold and whether you are enrolled in Medicare. We do not give tax advice, so please confirm your situation with a tax professional before you contribute.

What About Pre-existing Conditions?

Sharing for pre-existing conditions opens up over time.

A condition is treated as pre-existing if it was diagnosed or treated in the 12 months before you joined, or 36 months for cancer. Controlled high blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid conditions, and Type 2 diabetes are exempt from pre-existing limits.

The community shares those costs up to $5,000 per Sharing Request in year one, $30,000 in year two, $75,000 in year three, and $150,000 in year four. From year five onward, there is no maximum. Ongoing maintenance of a pre-existing condition is not shared at any time. Member Guidelines govern all sharing eligibility.

Why I Am So Excited About This

I have been helping families lower their healthcare costs since 2004, and this is the membership I have been waiting for.

Member-only contributions run roughly $225 to $335 a month, and family contributions run roughly $575 to $810, depending on the MRA you choose. A higher MRA means a lower monthly contribution. Monthly contributions vary by household size, MRA selection, and tobacco use.

With 18 levels to choose from, you set your own exposure instead of taking whatever the market hands you.

HSA Trivia

How many Member Responsibility Amount levels does The HSA Healthshare offer?

Answer: 18, ranging from $1,500 to $10,000 in $500 steps. A higher level lowers your monthly contribution.
