Save Thousands Annually: The Health Sharing Plan That Gives You Comprehensive Protection and Triple Tax Savings With an HSA

Ultrio HSA is a 3-in-1 healthcare membership that combines three things most people thought you had to choose between: affordable health sharing for major medical expenses, unlimited virtual primary care for everyday needs, and full eligibility to contribute to a Health Savings Account.

Powered by Zion HealthShare, one of the most established sharing communities in the country, and paired with an HSA-qualifying MEC plan, a federal ACA designation, Ultrio HSA gives you comprehensive protection at a fraction of what traditional health insurance costs.

First, it is important to remember that Ultrio HSA is not health insurance. Ultrio HSA’s major-medical component is a voluntary health sharing membership in the Zion HealthShare community. It is not regulated by state insurance departments, and because it is not health insurance it is exempt from the requirements that apply to ACA-regulated health insurance plans. In addition, the included MEC plan is a separate, regulated insurance product that handles preventive care and qualifies you to contribute to a Health Savings Account. So when we say Ultrio HSA is a 3-in-1 membership, we mean the MEC plan (insurance), the Zion HealthShare community (not insurance, voluntary cost sharing), and your HSA eligibility (a tax benefit), packaged together.

It is designed for self-employed individuals, independent contractors, entrepreneurs, and health-conscious families who want more from their healthcare than an overpriced insurance card.

What Makes Ultrio HSA Different

Most health sharing plans handle major medical expenses. Traditional HSA plans help you save on taxes. And standard telehealth memberships give you access to virtual care.

Instead, Ultrio HSA does all three, bundled into a single, streamlined membership.

Health Sharing for Major Medical Expenses

When you face a significant medical expense, a surgery, a hospitalization, an emergency, you pay your Initial Unshared Amount (IUA) first. Eligible costs above that threshold are submitted to the Zion HealthShare community for sharing.

There is no insurance company deciding whether to approve your claim. And you can see any licensed provider, no networks required.

Zion HealthShare caps your household’s out-of-pocket responsibility at three IUAs in any rolling 12-month period. After that, additional eligible expenses are shared with no further IUA required.

Virtual Primary Care, Unlimited and Included

Ultrio HSA includes continuous access to virtual primary care.

This is not just a telehealth line for urgent questions, it is ongoing primary care through a virtual platform, available whenever you need it.

Use it for routine concerns, medication management, chronic condition support, mental health, and more.

Prescription Savings Up to 80%

Your Ultrio membership includes a comprehensive prescription program with access to patient assistance programs, international sourcing, and benefit credits.

Many members save up to 80% on a wide range of medications, including brand-name and specialty drugs. No insurance card needed.

HSA-Qualified Through an Included MEC Plan

The MEC plan included with Ultrio HSA is an HSA-qualifying insurance plan that:

  • Includes 100% of in-network preventive care at no cost to you
  • Qualifies you legally to open and contribute to a Health Savings Account
  • Satisfies ACA MEC requirements

Because your HSA eligibility is tied to this MEC plan, not the health sharing component, you are fully eligible to contribute to your HSA from the moment you enroll.

How Ultrio HSA Works

STEP 1 Enroll and activate Your MEC insurance plan and Zion HealthShare membership activate upon enrollment. Preventive care benefits are available immediately in-network.
STEP 2

Open your Health Savings Account

With your HSA-qualifying MEC plan in place, you are eligible to open and fund an HSA with the bank or administrator of your choice. For 2026, you can contribute up to $4,400 (individual) or $8,750 (family), all pre-tax. Those 55 and older can contribute an additional $1,000.

STEP 3

Use virtual primary care for everyday health needs

Access unlimited virtual primary care whenever you need it, no waiting room, no co-pay, no burning through your HSA for routine concerns.

STEP 4

Pay for everyday costs tax-free from your HSA

Prescriptions, dental, vision, labs, and hundreds of other qualified medical expenses can be paid directly from your HSA, completely tax-free.

STEP 5

Submit large medical expenses for sharing

Present yourself as a self-pay patient at your chosen provider. Pay your IUA for that medical need. Then submit eligible costs above your IUA through the Zion HealthShare member portal. Sharing processes typically within two to five weeks with proper documentation.

STEP 6

Keep and grow what you don’t spend

Your HSA balance rolls over year after year. It earns interest. You can invest in mutual funds. At age 65, you can withdraw for any purpose without penalty (ordinary income taxes apply for non-medical use).

The Triple Tax Advantage, What It Means for You

Health Savings Accounts offer three layers of tax savings that no other common healthcare account can match.

TAX BREAK #1

Contributions are deductible

Every dollar you deposit into your HSA reduces your taxable income, dollar for dollar. For 2026, that means up to $4,400 in deductions for individuals and $8,750 for families.

This deduction applies whether or not you itemize your federal return. Most states also allow the same deduction for state income taxes.

TAX BREAK #2

Growth is tax-deferred

Your HSA balance earns interest tax-free. If you invest in mutual funds or other options available through your HSA administrator, those gains are also sheltered while they remain in the account.

TAX BREAK #3

Qualified withdrawals are tax-free

When you use HSA funds to pay for qualified medical expenses, doctor visits, prescriptions, dental and vision care, mental health services, and hundreds of other eligible costs, there is no federal tax due on the withdrawal.

For example, a family in the 22% federal tax bracket contributing the full $8,750 family limit in 2026 would save approximately $1,925 in federal taxes on contributions alone. Furthermore, when you factor in state income tax savings and the tax-free nature of withdrawals, total annual HSA benefit is often $2,500 or more.  Combine that with health sharing’s dramatically lower monthly contributions, and Ultrio HSA members typically save thousands of dollars per year compared to traditional insurance.

Ultrio HSA vs Ultrio Plus, What’s the Difference?

Ultrio comes in two flavors, and the right one depends on how you want to handle everyday care.

Ultrio HSA Built around HSA eligibility. The included MEC plan keeps you HSA-qualified, so you can build long-term tax-free savings. You handle most everyday in-person care yourself, often paid from your HSA, and you have unlimited 24/7 virtual care included for routine concerns.

Ultrio Plus Adds in-person primary care, specialist visits, urgent care, and labs at $0 with care coordination. It is the heavier-use plan for households that want a fuller benefit package without juggling out-of-pocket spend on routine visits. However, Ultrio Plus is ACA-compliant but is not marketed as an HSA-qualified plan, so it is the right pick when broader everyday access matters more than HSA contributions.

Quick decision guide

Pick Ultrio HSA if you want HSA eligibility, you are comfortable handling routine visits yourself (often paid from your HSA), and you value the long-term triple tax advantage.
Pick Ultrio Plus if you expect to use in-person primary care, specialists, urgent care, or labs regularly and you would rather have those visits at $0 through care coordination than fund an HSA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ultrio HSA actually HSA-eligible?

Yes.

The included MEC plan is an HSA-qualifying insurance plan that satisfies ACA MEC requirements. Because HSA eligibility is tied to this MEC plan rather than the health sharing component, members are fully eligible to open and contribute to a Health Savings Account from the moment they enroll.”

How does sharing work for large medical expenses?

When you have a significant medical need, you pay your Initial Unshared Amount (IUA) first.

You then submit eligible costs above your IUA through the Zion HealthShare member portal. Your household out-of-pocket is capped at three IUAs in any rolling 12-month period. Sharing is not a guarantee of payment and Zion HealthShare is not insurance.

How does the virtual primary care benefit work?

Ultrio HSA and Ultrio Plus both include unlimited 24/7 virtual care through the Primestin Care app.

You can request a virtual visit anytime for routine concerns, medication management, chronic condition support, or mental health. There is no co-pay, and you do not need to use your HSA dollars for these visits.

Is there a waiting period for major medical sharing?

Yes.

Some services, including maternity and pre-membership conditions, are subject to waiting periods under the Zion HealthShare member guidelines. Your Personal Benefit Manager can walk you through the specific timelines that apply to your household and the services you expect to use.

How much will my HSA contribution lower my taxes?

Every dollar you contribute to your HSA reduces your taxable income by that same dollar.

For 2026, the federal contribution limit is $4,400 for an individual and $8,750 for a family, with an extra $1,000 catch-up contribution if you are 55 or older.

Can I spend my HSA money on things like dental, vision, or prescriptions?

Yes.

HSA dollars can be used tax-free on hundreds of qualified medical expenses defined by the IRS, well beyond just doctor visits. Common eligible expenses include:

  • Prescription medications and many over-the-counter drugs
  • Dental care, including cleanings, fillings, crowns, and orthodontics
  • Vision care, including eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, and LASIK
  • Mental health services, including therapy and counseling
  • Lab work, diagnostic tests, and imaging
  • Chiropractic care, acupuncture, and physical therapy
  • Medical equipment such as crutches, blood pressure monitors, and breast pumps

For the full list, the IRS publishes an authoritative reference in Publication 502 (Medical and Dental Expenses) and Publication 969 (Health Savings Accounts). Save your receipts. Withdrawals for non-qualified expenses before age 65 are taxed as ordinary income plus a 20% penalty, so always confirm an expense qualifies before paying with HSA funds.
