Wellpoint Plan Tiers

Wellpoint offers ACA-compliant plans in four metal tiers, each reflecting your estimated coinsurance costs in the event you need care.

Bronze

These plans pay 60% of your covered medical expenses after your deductible. You will be responsible for the remaining 40%.

Bronze plan tiers feature the lowest premiums of all the Affordable Care Act plans, but they also have the highest coinsurance percentage of any of the plan tiers.
However, your maximum out-of-pocket cost within the calendar year is capped at $9,200 for individuals, and $18,000 for family plans, as of 2025.

Gold

Gold-tier plans pay up to 80% of your expenses after higher premiums, suitable for those with anticipated healthcare needs. They do not qualify for cost sharing reductions.

Silver

Silver plans pay 70% of your medical costs after your deductible. You pay the remaining 30%. Silver-tier plans are considered to be balanced between generous coverage and keeping monthly premiums reasonable costs.

Silver plans are the only plans that allow you to qualify for cost sharing reductions (CSRs) which reduce your premium and coinsurance costs, depending on your income. You must purchase a Silver-tier plan, and have an income of 250% of the federal poverty level or less in order to qualify for cost sharing reductions.

Again, your maximum out-of-pocket cost for a Silver-tier plan is capped at $9,200 for individuals, and $18,000 for family plans, as of 2025.

Platinum

90% coverage, highest premiums, lowest out-of-pocket costsMaximum out-of-pocket costs for 2025: $9,200 for individuals, $18,400 for families.

Note: Specific Wellpoint plans may have lower out-of-pocket caps than the federal maximum.. Ask a Personal Benefits Manager for specifics based on your location.
