Health care sharing plans have been on the rise in recent years due to unaffordable insurance premiums and deductibles, as well as the individual mandate that levies a fine to anyone who goes without insurance for more than three months. It’s no wonder that people are forgoing traditional insurance and turning to healthshare plans instead.
Health care sharing plans—also called healthshare ministries and healthcare sharing ministries, among other names—are organizations that facilitate the sharing of medical expenses between members. Instead of paying monthly premiums, members pay a monthly fee, and the collective money is used to pay for qualifying medical expenses.
In this blog, I’ll be discussing Aliera Health, one of the most popular health care sharing plans, and the benefits you’d receive as a member.
Aliera Health Plans
Aliera has two main plans: AlieraCare 5000 Premium plan and the Unity Healthshare Gold plan. With both plans, members have their choice of doctors, can enroll any time (a huge difference from Obamacare that has strict enrollment dates), and are exempt from the individuals mandate. Most doctors accept these plans.

Aliera care has a member’s shared responsibility amount (MSRA) of $5,000—your maximum out-of-pocket costs. The amount is similar to a deductible but not a deductible. The lifetime cap for this plan is $1,000,000. So, if you think you’ll need more coverage than that over a lifetime, perhaps consider a different plan.
