Combine Your JHS Community Plan with a Health Savings Account
For even greater cost-efficiency and cost savings, you can potentially combine the JHS healthshare with a health savings account, or HSA. These exciting savings vehicles allow you to set aside money tax free for future medical expenses. They also let you pay any out-of-pocket medical costs – such as your MRA and AMRA – with tax-free dollars. We do this by combining the health sharing platform with the HSA MEC solution now available from HSA For America.
What Is HSA MEC?
The HSA MEC solution is a low-cost minimum essential coverage (MEC) health benefit plan designed to meet the federal government’s minimum requirements for a high deductible health plan (HDHP), while also covering all preventive care benefits mandated under the Affordable Care Act.
Enrolling in HSA MEC allows you to contribute pre-tax dollars to an HSA.
If you contribute the annual maximum allowed by law, you should soon have more than enough money in your HSA to pay your MRA, AMRA, and other healthcare-related fees and expenses with tax-free dollars by using your HSA.
Note: Currently, HSA MEC is only available to business owners, independent contractors, or those with verifiable income from self-employment.
❗Important: HSA MEC is not a replacement for your JHS Community health sharing plan. It’s designed to work alongside your existing health sharing plan, at minimal costs.
Typically, the immediate tax, first-year benefits of the maximum HSA contribution – or anywhere close to it – more than offsets the cost of adding HSA MEC. And HSA MEC has important preventive care benefits of its own, which can also help reduce your out-of-pocket costs for medical care.

Frequently Asked Questions About JHS Community
[Health Share FAQ]
Q: What makes JHS Community Healthshares different from other health sharing programs?
A: JHS Community Healthshares offers low monthly contribution rates, particularly on the Distinct option.
Unlike other health sharing programs, JHS uses the MultiPlan PHCS Care Network, which includes over one million healthcare providers nationwide, to keep costs low. Additionally, JHS plans provide clear terms for cost-sharing, such as sharing 100% of eligible expenses after the initial out-of-pocket amount on some plans.
Q: What is the Member Responsibility Amount (MRA) and how does it affect my costs?
A: The Member Responsibility Amount (MRA) is the initial out-of-pocket amount you are responsible for before the plan begins sharing costs. Options for MRA are $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000, depending on the plan you choose. Higher MRAs mean lower monthly contributions.
Q: How does JHS Community handle office visits and maternity care?
A: For office visits, JHS Community requires a $40 visit fee for eligible outpatient visits. The plans share up to a maximum of $400 per visit, with different limits on the number of visits per membership year (4 for Distinct, 8 for Diverse, and 12 for Dynamic). Maternity care is shared differently across plans:
- Distinct: Not eligible.

- Diverse Plan: You cover 20% of the next $10,000 after your MRA. AMRA caps at $2,000 per member, $4,000 for member + 1, or $6,000 for a family.
